Formed in 2005 after the merger of several smaller towns, Aso still offers a break from the urbane.
Kick off your visit on the 22nd (Sat): get to know the fascinating history of Aso Mizuki Meguri, explore the activities along Ikeyama Springs, then look for gifts at Michi-no-Eki Asobonosato Kugino, and finally examine the collection at Aso Highland Museum Park. On your second day here, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kuninomiyatsuko Shrine, get great views at Daikanbo, then indulge in Japan's hot spring tradition at some of the top local onsens, and finally take in the dramatic scenery at Nabegataki Falls.
