The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Discover out-of-the-way places like Toji and Tofuku-ji Temple. Get a sense of the local culture at Nijo Castle and Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine. Take a break from Kyoto with a short trip to Dotonbori in Osaka, about 1h 10 min away. There's much more to do: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kinkaku-ji, contemplate the long history of Kiyomizu-dera Temple, and take a stroll through Gion.

Springfield, USA to Kyoto is an approximately 20.5-hour flight. You can also do a combination of flight and train. Due to the time zone difference, you'll lose 15 hours traveling from Springfield to Kyoto. Traveling from Springfield in July, Kyoto is somewhat warmer at night with lows of 76°F. Cap off your sightseeing on the 4th (Thu) early enough to travel to Ishigaki.

Ishigaki, the most populous island in the chain, features the country's southernmost city and acts as a transport hub for exploring the landmasses that surround.
On the 5th (Fri), kick back and relax at Kondoi Beach, then stop by Yurateiku Market, and then get outside with Outdoor Activities. On the 6th (Sat), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: enjoy the sand and surf at Yonehara Beach, then take in panoramic vistas at Tamatorizaki Observatory, then get outside with Cape Hirakubozaki, and finally Head underground at Ishigaki Island Limestone Cave.

Traveling by combination of train and flight from Kyoto to Ishigaki takes 6 hours. Alternatively, you can fly. Traveling from Kyoto in July, expect somewhat warmer with lows of 82°F in Ishigaki. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 6th (Sat) so you can travel to Miyakojima.

A city jurisdiction formed after the merger of several towns in 2005, Miyakojima spans six linked-up islands.
Start off your visit on the 7th (Sun): take in the views from Kurima Bridge, then enjoy the sand and surf at Yonaha Maehama Beach, then take in the views from Irabu Bridge, and finally enjoy the sand and surf at Sunayama Beach. On your second day here, see the vivid underwater world at Yabiji and then kick back and relax at Aragusuku Beach.

You can fly from Ishigaki to Miyakojima in 2 hours. In July, plan for daily highs up to 89°F, and evening lows to 80°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 8th (Mon) to allow enough time to travel to Tokyo.
