Proud of their hometown's distinct culture and dialect, many natives of Osaka describe their city as "Japan's anti-capital." An antidote to Tokyo's hectic energy, Osaka marches to the beat of its own drum, serving as the country's longtime commercial and industrial hub.
Nara Park and Shinsaibashi-suji Shopping Street are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Visit Osaka Castle and Todai-ji Temple for their historical value. When in Osaka, make a side trip to see Nigatsu-do Temple in Nara, approximately 1h 05 min away. There's still lots to do: shop like a local with Dotonbori, examine the collection at Museum of Oriental Ceramics, get in on the family fun at Universal Studios Japan, and admire nature's wide array of creatures at Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan.
