Aptly nicknamed the Eternal City, Rome is the birthplace of the Roman Empire, one of the world's greatest civilizations ever.
You've now added Trevi Fountain to your itinerary. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Welcome to Rome and Quirinale Palace (Palazzo del Quirinale). There's much more to do: steep yourself in history at Colosseum, explore the ancient world of Palatine Hill, visit Trastevere, and make a trip to Spanish Steps.

Considered a cultural, artistic, and architectural jewel of Italy, Florence is the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance.
You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Basilica San Miniato al Monte and Cappella Brancacci. There's still lots to do: make a trip to Piazzale Michelangelo, get to know the fascinating history of Piazza della Signoria, take in nature's colorful creations at The Boboli Gardens, and hunt for treasures at Mercato Centrale.

Getting from Rome to Florence by train takes about 2 hours. Other options: drive; or fly. Traveling from Rome in May, you can expect nighttime temperatures to be little chillier in Florence, with lows of 52°F. Cap off your sightseeing on the 2nd (Tue) early enough to catch the train to Bologna.
