More than 20 million people call Cairo their home and, as soon as you set foot in the sprawling metropolis, it's evident they make it crowded and chaotic, but also exuberant and charming.
Egyptian Antiquities Museum and Khafre's Pyramid are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Deepen your sense of the past at sights like Old City (Coptic Cairo) and Gizeh Plateau. Take a break from Cairo with a short trip to Great Sphinx in Giza, about 34 minutes away. There's still lots to do: get a taste of the local shopping with Khan Al-Khalili, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Mosque of Al-Azhar, delve into the distant past at Keops Pyramid, and admire the landmark architecture of Hanging Church (El Muallaqa, Sitt Mariam, St Mary).

You can fly from Sharm El Sheikh to Cairo in 2 hours. Other options are to take a bus; or drive. In January, Cairo is slightly colder than Sharm El Sheikh - with highs of 21°C and lows of 11°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 7th (Sun) to allow time to travel to Aswan.
