The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Step out of the city life by going to Nara Park and Kyoto Isshu Trail, Higahiyama Fuahimi Inari Course. Head to Dotonbori and Daimaru Museum Umedafor some retail therapy. There's still lots to do: steep yourself in history at Kiyomizu-dera Temple, wander the streets of Gion, shop like a local with Nishiki Market Shopping District, and take in the spiritual surroundings of Kinkaku-ji.

You can take a train from Tokyo to Kyoto in 3 hours. Other options are to fly; or drive. Expect a daytime high around 49°F in February, and nighttime lows around 35°F. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 3rd (Tue) to allow time to travel back home.
