The cultural, economic, and political center of the country, Vienna has developed from its early Celtic and Roman roots into a medieval and Baroque city, with an old town that was designated a World Heritage Site in 2001.
Your inner history buff will appreciate Schonbrunn Palace and St. Stephen's Cathedral. Belvedere Palace and Central Cemetery (Zentralfriedhof) will appeal to museum buffs. Change things up with a short trip to Melk Abbey in Melk (about 1h 05 min away). There's still lots to do: wander the streets of Historic Center of Vienna, admire the masterpieces at Albertina, examine the collection at Imperial Palace (Hofburg), and admire the natural beauty at Schonbrunner Gardens.
