The site of the continent's first Spanish colony, Cartagena retains much of its colonial flavor thanks to a World Heritage-listed old town, encircled by old walls and protected by imposing fortresses.
On the 16th (Mon), don't miss a visit to Plaza Bolivar, contemplate the long history of Torre del Reloj, then pause for some serene contemplation at Sanctuary of Saint Peter Claver, then steep yourself in history at Plaza Santo Domingo, and finally take in the spiritual surroundings of Convent of Santa Cruz de la Popa. Here are some ideas for day two: take in the architecture and atmosphere at Iglesia de la Trinidad and then discover the deep blue sea with a scuba or snorkeling tour.
