Get outdoors at Mt. Ishizuchi and Shikoku Karst. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Garyu Sanso and Oyamazumi Shrine. Explore Matsuyama's surroundings by going to Anaba Shrine (in Imabari), Kaiganzan Iwayaji Temple (in Kumakogen-cho) and Uwajima Castle (in Uwajima). Next up on the itinerary: step into the grandiose world of Matsuyama Castle, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Monjuin Tokuseiji Temple, don't miss a visit to Taisanji Temple, and steep yourself in history at Streets in Yokaichi-Gokoku Areas.

Sydney, Australia to Matsuyama is an approximately 15-hour flight. Due to the time zone difference, you'll gain 1 hour traveling from Sydney to Matsuyama. In December, Matsuyama is colder than Sydney - with highs of 13°C and lows of 7°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 1st (Wed) so you can go by car to Takamatsu.

A modern city and a major transport hub facing Seto Inland Sea, Takamatsu offers a bustling city lifestyle contrasted with carefully manicured, tranquil green areas at the foot of the mountains and the lava plateau.
On the 2nd (Thu), take in the pleasant sights at Ritsurin Garden, then get engrossed in the history at Shikoku Mura Village, then contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Yakuriji Temple, and finally indulge in Japan's hot spring tradition at some of the top local onsens. Keep things going the next day: don't miss a visit to Marugame Castle, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Negoroji Temple, then visit a coastal fixture at Takamatsuko Tamamo Breakwater Light, and finally contemplate the long history of Kotohira-gu Shrine.

You can drive from Matsuyama to Takamatsu in 2 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or take a bus. Expect slightly colder evenings in Takamatsu when traveling from Matsuyama in January, with lows around 1°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 3rd (Fri) early enough to drive to Kochi.

Getting from Takamatsu to Kochi by car takes about 2 hours. Other options: take a train; or take a bus. Expect somewhat warmer weather when traveling from Takamatsu in January: highs in Kochi hover around 13°C, while lows dip to 2°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 6th (Mon) to allow enough time to travel back home.
