As the busy capital of São Miguel, Ponta Delgada represents the most visited place on the island. Known for its historical buildings, the city offers 17th- and 18th-century convents and churches, as well as cobbled pedestrian streets and hidden squares.
Get in touch with nature at Caldeira das Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo. Nossa Senhora da Paz and Igreja do Santo Cristo will appeal to history buffs. Venture out of the city with trips to Mosteiros (Mosteiros Beach & Piscinas Naturais) and Frade Natural Pools (in Ribeira Grande). And it doesn't end there: stroll through Praia de Santa Barbara, identify plant and animal life at Caldeira Velha Environmental Interpretation Centre, engage your brain at Santana Astronomical Observatory, and pause for some serene contemplation at Igreja Matriz de Sao Sebastiao.

Green Island
Known as The Green Island, Sao Miguel is the largest of the nine islands of Azores and is considered a natural paradise. These islands were discovered in the 15th century and, according to myth, are reputed to be part of the lost empire of Atlantis. Sao Miguel's most prominent feature is a set of twin lakes, one of which is blue and the other green. Visitors also enjoy the island's park, golf courses, beaches, mountains, marina, and ocean views. Stop for a look at the city's monuments and architecture, and experience the cobbled streets lined with a variety of restaurants, shops, bars, and cafes.
