Kirkwall is the largest town and capital of the Orkney Islands of Scotland. Get a sense of the local culture at Saint Magnus Cathedral and Italian Chapel on Lamb Holm. Visit Skara Brae and Bishop & Earls Palace for their historical value. When in Kirkwall, make a side trip to see Brough Of Birsay in Birsay, approximately 32 minutes away. There's lots more to do: delve into the distant past at Ring of Brodgar, contemplate the long history of Maeshowe, look for all kinds of wild species at Marwick Head RSPB Nature Reserve, and get engrossed in the history at The Orkney Museum.

London to Kirkwall is an approximately 5.5-hour flight. You can also do a combination of train and bus; or do a combination of train and ferry. Plan for little chillier temperatures traveling from London in July, with highs in Kirkwall at 19°C and lows at 11°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 13th (Sat) so you can drive to Rousay.
