The hilly port city of Nagasaki has become known internationally as one of the two Japanese cities to be destroyed by an atomic bomb towards the close of World War II.
Step out of Nagasaki with an excursion to Huis Ten Bosch in Sasebo--about 1h 15 min away. There's lots more to do: get engrossed in the history at Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Sofukuji Temple, head off the coast to Hashima Island, and snap pictures at Megane Bridge.

Bangkok, Thailand to Nagasaki is an approximately 10-hour flight. You can also do a combination of flight and train. Traveling from Bangkok to Nagasaki, you'll lose 2 hours due to the time zone difference. Expect a bit cooler weather when traveling from Bangkok in July: highs in Nagasaki hover around 36°C, while lows dip to 29°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 4th (Thu) to allow enough time to drive to Beppu.

Drive from Nagasaki to Beppu in 3 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or take a bus. Traveling from Nagasaki in July, expect nights in Beppu to be about the same, around 28°C, while days are little chillier, around 32°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 5th (Fri) so you can catch the train to Kagoshima.

Kick off your visit on the 6th (Sat): learn about all things military at Chiran Peace Museum and then get impressive views of Sakurajima. Take a train from Beppu to Kagoshima in 3.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or do a combination of train and flight. In July, daily temperatures in Kagoshima can reach 34°C, while at night they dip to 26°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 7th (Sun) to allow time to take a train to Kumamoto.

You can take a train from Kagoshima to Kumamoto in an hour. Other options are to drive; or take a bus. In July, daytime highs in Kumamoto are 35°C, while nighttime lows are 27°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 8th (Mon) to allow enough time to take a train to Fukuoka.

On the 9th (Tue), let little ones run wild at Ohori Park, make a trip to Fukuoka Tower, then enjoy breathtaking views from Komenoyama Obsevatory, then contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Dazaifu Temmangu, and finally admire the masterpieces at Fukuoka Asian Art Museum. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: admire all the interesting features of Fukuoka Yahuoku! Dome, admire the landmark architecture of Hakata Station, then take in the spiritual surroundings of Kushida Shrine, and finally browse the different shops at Tenjin Underground Shopping Center.
