The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River.
Kick off your visit on the 14th (Sat): contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Dazaifu Temmangu, examine the collection at Kyushu National Museum, then let little ones run wild at Ohori Park, then contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kushida Shrine, and finally buy something for everyone on your list at Tenjin Underground Shopping Center. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: wander the streets of Mojiko Retro, look for gifts at Shimamoto Mentaiko Hakata Ekimae, and then get to know the fascinating history of Nijino Matsubara.

Kick off your visit on the 18th (Wed): step into the grandiose world of Nijo Castle, then take in the spiritual surroundings of Kinkaku-ji, then see the interesting displays at Kyoto Museum of Traditional Crafts Fureaikan, and finally contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: contemplate the long history of Heian Shrine, then steep yourself in history at Kiyomizu-dera Temple, and then wander the streets of Gion.

Getting from Hiroshima to Kyoto by train takes about 2 hours. Other options: drive; or take a bus. In September, daytime highs in Kyoto are 33°C, while nighttime lows are 23°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 19th (Thu) so you can catch the train to Osaka.
