The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Get a sense of the local culture at Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Nijo Castle. Discover out-of-the-way places like Eikando Zenrinji Temple and Chion-in Temple. Go for a jaunt from Kyoto to Osaka to see Osaka Castle about 1h 10 min away. There's still lots to do: contemplate the long history of Kiyomizu-dera Temple, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kinkaku-ji, and wander the streets of Gion.

Sydney, Australia to Kyoto is an approximately 13.5-hour combination of flight and train. You can also fly. Due to the time zone difference, you'll gain 1 hour traveling from Sydney to Kyoto. Plan for much colder temperatures traveling from Sydney in December, with highs in Kyoto at 13°C and lows at 4°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 1st (Wed) early enough to go by car to Ise.

A spiritual center of Shintoism, Ise stands as a traditional city where visitors can see the roots of Japanese culture in a number of well-preserved natural and historic sites.
Start off your visit on the 2nd (Thu): take in the spiritual surroundings of Sarutahiko Shrine, steep yourself in history at Oharai-machi, then get engrossed in the history at Sengukan, then contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Ise Grand Shrine, and finally get to know the fascinating history of Ise Shrine Geku.

Drive from Kyoto to Ise in 2 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or take a bus. Traveling from Kyoto in January, you can expect nighttime temperatures to be somewhat warmer in Ise, with lows of 7°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 2nd (Thu) early enough to travel to Ishigaki.

Ishigaki, the most populous island in the chain, features the country's southernmost city and acts as a transport hub for exploring the landmasses that surround.
On the 3rd (Fri), take in panoramic vistas at Tamatorizaki Observatory, visit a coastal fixture at Cape Hirakubozaki, and then find your balance on the water with some of the best stand-up paddleboarding in the area. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the 4th (Sat): kick back and relax at Kondoi Beach, then walk around Kabira Park, and then tour the pleasant surroundings at Yonehara Beach.

You can do a combination of train and flight from Ise to Ishigaki in 6.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of train, bus, and flight. Expect much warmer weather when traveling from Ise in January: highs in Ishigaki hover around 24°C, while lows dip to 19°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 4th (Sat) to allow time to travel to Miyakojima.

Miyakojima

A city jurisdiction formed after the merger of several towns in 2005, Miyakojima spans six linked-up islands.
Start off your visit on the 5th (Sun): take in the views from Kurima Bridge, then kick back and relax at Yonaha Maehama Beach, then snap pictures at Irabu Ohashi, and finally tour the pleasant surroundings at Toguchi no Hama. On the next day, kick back and relax at Sunayama Beach, then kick back and relax at Aragusuku Beach, and then visit a coastal fixture at Higashi Hennazaki Lighthouse.

You can fly from Ishigaki to Miyakojima in 2 hours. In January, daytime highs in Miyakojima are 24°C, while nighttime lows are 19°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 7th (Tue) early enough to travel back home.
