Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Pontocho and Ninna-ji Temple. Kodai-ji Temple and Shimogamo Jinja will appeal to history buffs. Take a break from Kyoto with a short trip to Byodoin in Uji, about 44 minutes away. Next up on the itinerary: take in the awesome beauty at Mt. Kurama, take in the spiritual surroundings of Toji, contemplate the long history of Yasaka Shrine, and don't miss a visit to Eikando Zenrinji Temple.

Traveling by train from Himeji to Kyoto takes an hour. Alternatively, you can drive. In October, plan for daily highs up to 27°C, and evening lows to 18°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 3rd (Sat) early enough to catch the train to Hikone.
