Aptly nicknamed the Eternal City, Rome is the birthplace of the Roman Empire, one of the world's greatest civilizations ever.
Start off your visit on the 1st (Tue): pause for some serene contemplation at Basilica di San Pietro, then admire the masterpieces at Vatican Museums, and then steep yourself in history at Colosseum. On the 2nd (Wed), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: admire the masterpieces at Galleria Borghese, then admire the landmark architecture of Pantheon, then admire the local landmark of Trevi Fountain, and finally delve into the distant past at Palatine Hill.

Sydney, Australia to Rome is an approximately 24-hour flight. You can also do a combination of train and flight; or do a combination of bus and flight. Due to the time zone difference, you'll gain 9 hours traveling from Sydney to Rome. In May in Rome, expect temperatures between 28°C during the day and 17°C at night. On the 3rd (Thu), examine the collection at Galleria dell'Accademia, then pause for some serene contemplation at Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, then take an in-depth tour of Basilica di Santa Croce, and finally admire the masterpieces at Pitti Palace.
