Originally a frontier mining town, Durango is known today for its scenic setting, outdoor activities, and the 1880s steam-powered railway that takes visitors through sections of the mountains where roads don't reach.
Do your shopping at Scenic Aperture Gallery and Earthen Vessel Gallery. Let the collections at The Anasazi Heritage Center and San Juan County Historical Society capture your imagination. Take a break from Durango with a short trip to Million Dollar Highway in Silverton, about 30 minutes away. There's still lots to do: tour the pleasant surroundings at Animas River Trail, hit the slopes at Purgatory Resort, and examine the collection at Durango Fish Hatchery and Wildlife Museum.
