The site of the continent's first Spanish colony, Cartagena retains much of its colonial flavor thanks to a World Heritage-listed old town, encircled by old walls and protected by imposing fortresses.
Kick off your visit on the 27th (Tue): look for all kinds of wild species at Aviario Nacional de Colombia and then make a trip to Centro de Convenciones Cartagena de Indias.

Prepare for somewhat warmer weather when traveling from New York City in August: high temperatures in Cartagena hover around 91°F and lows are around 78°F. Take a break from the city and head to El Dorado Bird Reserve and Nabusimake. Satisfy your inner culture vulture at Museo del Oro Tairona - Casa de la Aduana and Memorial Center of the Sierra Nevada. The adventure continues: kick back and relax at Playa Neguanje, head outdoors with Rio Don Diego, get up close and personal with brilliant marine life at Mundo Marino, and steep yourself in history at Paseo El Camellon.

You can drive from Cartagena to Santa Marta in 3.5 hours. Another option is to take a bus. In August, plan for daily highs up to 92°F, and evening lows to 78°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 31st (Sat) to allow enough time to travel to Medellin.

Traveling from Santa Marta in August, things will get little chillier in Medellin: highs are around 83°F and lows about 64°F. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 3rd (Tue) early enough to travel to Bogota.
