Trip Planner: Europe / The Netherlands / Utrecht Province / Utrecht / Railway Museum (Het Spoorwegmuseum)
Housed in a historical former train station, Railway Museum (Het Spoorwegmuseum) documents the history of the industry and its development in the Netherlands. Visit the museum and travel through time from the origins of train technology onward through the golden age of rail at the turn of the 20th century to the present (especially relevant given the Netherlands' extensive train network). A number of exhibits display historical train cars in addition to full-scale replicas contained within the grounds of the museum as well as within the halls of the station building itself. Don't miss getting an up-close look at the last steam locomotive to be used in the country, Holland's first electric train, and the recreation of the "The Eagle"--the nation's very first locomotive from 1839. Keep in mind that you can access the museum via an hourly train service from Utrecht's central station. Put Railway Museum (Het Spoorwegmuseum) at the forefront of your travel plans using our Utrecht road trip site.
Railway Museum (Het Spoorwegmuseum) Reviews
We spent an afternoon in this museum expeciting it would offer enough for kids of all ages, but this was not true. Our grandson is almost three, which means he is too young for almost all features... more »
This park is a great place for a funny day-out with your family. It is great for kids and has some interest to adults also. In my view this is a theme park about trains with lots to see, do and live..... more »
I did not finish the entire museum. But, it was fantastic. The atmosphere of the old factory with all kind of different types of trains make this place becomes unique. It is not about the museum itself, but also about all the kids there as well. You can see all the happy, enthusiasm, curious faces, even with adults. It is a perfect place for family, group of friends. You will love it.
I really enjoyed myself here. I'm in my mid twenties and do not consider myself to be within the aim of this museum but I couldn't be more wrong. The place itself is pretty impressive on its own but there are so many fun and interactive displays to enjoy and immerse yourself in. There something for everyone and of every age. I'd say 5 hours here is a good amount of time on a quieter day.
