Stop by the Alkmaar's Waagplein square to indulge in the tastes and traditions of the famous Alkmaar cheese market. The Alkmaar region is renowned for its cheese, and the makers have been selling their product in the city for at least 400 years. After the bell opens the market, the whole square erupts with activity. See how the experts inspect the cheese, witness the frantic haggling, admire the special walk of the carriers who haul huge loads of cheese on barrows suspended from their shoulders, and don't miss the chance to do some tasting and bargaining yourself. To improve your understanding of the market activities, check out the presentations, available in various languages. The market is in the center of the city and is easily accessible by car or public transportation from other cities. The market take place between March and September so please check website for all details. • Not much to add to the other reviews. This is a place to visit especially on the days they do the reenactment for tourists. Yes it's a bit touristy but educational and fun as well. Great way to...  more »
  • Unique experience to see them showcase the old traditions. Thumbs up for keeping the traditions alive. There are 3 shows, 10am , 11am and 12 noon. If you prefer less crowd, join the 11am show instead of the 10am show as we saw that the crowd seems better at the 11 am show while we were checking out the other stalls and merchants around the square. Get their sampler package ( 4 types of cheese in a Bag) at ten euros each to try!
  • Alkmaar is a pretty provincial town, historic and usually quiet. However, Friday seems to be the busiest day as the cheese market is in. Rather trashy in my opinion with tourists from all over the world being loud and disrespectful- standing on chairs and tables from cafes and restaurants- to watch "the show". It is like a spectacle....hard to see anything. I'd prefer to walk around "ye olde"town and absorb the history. Guess these events are a must see on the international, trashy tourist's agenda- not mine.
