Sappraiwan Elephant Sanctuary is located within the 360-acre property of Sappraiwan Elephant Resort in Phitsanulok, Thailand. Enveloped by a lush mountain range and bordered by a gushing river, the property provides an idyllic setting for a resort.

The resort’s founding owner, Mr. Boon, constructed and opened what was then named Sappraiwan Grand Hotel and Resort in the 1990s. The extensive plot of land was a combination of thick forest and abandoned farm land when he purchased it, so he moved into a small wooden home on the property and began developing the resort.

One day, Mr.Boon’s vision for the resort changed unexpectedly. He was driving on the outskirts of Bangkok when he encountered an adult bull elephant, begging with his owner in the congested city streets. This tusker was named Boonmee, and in 2001, he became the sanctuary’s founding elephant.

THE STORY

This is the first entry in a series that will bring readers on a journey.

Shortly after, Mr. Boon rescued two female logging elephants, a mother and her young male calf that were street begging in Chiang Mai, and a one-year-old female calf that was already separated from her mother and street begging in Chiang Mai. .

Today, the sanctuary is home to 14 elephants, nine of which were born at the facility. This means each of the individuals are brothers, sisters, aunts, mothers and grandmothers – a herd. A family this size is rarely seen in captivity, and the sanctuary is a special place because it provides elephants with the opportunity to nurture their offspring, learn from their elders, and play with their siblings.

Sappraiwan Elephant Sanctuary is committed to putting welfare first, and in doing so, has eliminated riding, bathing, and feeding programs. Instead, tourists are invited to venture deep into the forest to observe this herd's natural behaviour as they play in the water, cover themselves in mud, and tear through the varying foliage on the resort's extensive property.
