Wat Phumin, Nan

#1 of 20 in Things to do in Nan
Take in the minutely detailed murals depicting rural life at Wat Phumin. Constructed in the 16th century in a cross-shaped design, the temple appears as if it were sitting on the backs of two giant snakes, with four distinct entrances each bearing their own motifs. Head inside to view the famous murals around the central golden altar, painted during the reconstruction of the temple over a century ago. The distinctive paintings depict scenes from the traditional lifestyle of the Thai Lue, the most famous being "Whispering of Love." Purchase souvenirs at the gift shop next door. To get the most from your visit, consider reading up on the murals' significance before you go, or see if you can ask someone on site to explain them. Plan your visit to Wat Phumin and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our Nan itinerary builder site.

  • Ancient temple constructed in 1596 that has become famous for its romantic wall murals. The temple itself sits on a platform that is supported on the backs of two long Naga snakes. The most famous wall mural is affectionately known to Thai people as "Whispering Lovers" or "Whispers of Love." A small shop on site sells English books about this and other temples and the author also offers guided tours.
  • Wat Phumin It is the most important temple in Nan Province! The shape of the temple is the only one in Thailand, with four of them and the inner four-faced Buddha, but it is best known for its murals. The murals with more than one hundred years of history are shabby but the rest are still beautiful, telling a lot of The things of the Nan Kingdom from the century before the last century, of course, the most famous is the "great whisperer". This is the most worthwhile place to visit by Lonely Planet! There will be a large night market on the road next to the temple from Friday to Sunday night. You can get some independently designed goods and local specialties at that night market. This night market is not just for eating and drinking, you can also massage or listen. Street performers, but it is best to give them some tips...hehehe
