Bridge Over the River Kwai, Kanchanaburi

Walk across a landmark of 20th-century history at Bridge Over the River Kwai, an impressive structure best known as the setting for a world-famous book and film. Constructed under Japanese authority by Allied POWs and Asian slave-laborers, the bridge is part of the Burma Railway route, and can now be traversed by foot. Bombed extensively by Allied forces during World War II, the bridge has been restored and once again cuts an imposing figure against the surrounding scenery. For anyone with an interest in social and military history--or literature and film, for that matter--the bridge represents an important and fulfilling place to visit. • I stayed in Kanchanaburi, so I went by bicycle from the hotel around eight o'clock before taking the train at half past ten. Regardless of the early morning, there are quite a few tourists, and most of the shops are open like souvenir shops. In the movie, Colonel Saito said that it was impossible to escape to the jungle island, but it was completely a town. It's also quite lively. It is a complicated feeling as a Japanese that the bridge that the Japanese army made to make forcibly becomes such a big sightseeing spot. I crossed the bridge on foot and came back. By the way, there is no entrance fee. I bought a T-shirt as a souvenir, but it was cheap with 100 baht per piece.

  • The bridge itself isn't very special. But if you know the story of the pow behind it or will make more sense why this is a popular tourist spot.  more »

  • Amazing and historical place one should have been. During the daytime ofcourse very crowded. Many tourists and specially tourists groups are attractive to this place. But on some days one can also find groups of local students in here. Toilets are nearby, many shops and a marketplace. If you are lucky you can also see a train going across the bridge because tours to WW2 places around start also at the bridge. Nice shots are possible from the bridge as well, you can walk back and forth. All in all a nice place for some hours. 👍✨✨✨🚂😎 🌉
  • A sobering but fascinating visit, especially if you are familiar with the movie "Bridge on the River Kwai". The story of the wartime atrocities committed by the Imperial Japanese forces on the allied prisoners of war is well documented. However it is sadly under reported and understood fact that over 100,000 forced workers from the local population also died in the construction of the railroad. A visit to the bridge and also the nearby Commonwealth War Graves Commission graveyard is highly recommended. Thai locals do not really understand the interest in past bad events, however if we don't remember and understand the evil in our past, how can we avoid them happening again in the future?
