Wat Rong Khun, Chiang Rai

#1 of 103 in Things to do in Chiang Rai
Must see · Architectural Building · Landmark
Take in the striking white angles and contours of Wat Rong Khun, a Buddhist temple cum art exhibit. The temple that once stood on the site was in a state of dilapidation, with no funds towards its refurbishment; artist Chalermchai Kositpipat decided to entirely rebuild the structure with his own money, opening it to visitors in 1997. The contemporary and unusual style of the buildings surprises and engages, while the using of modern, western motifs in murals--Michael Jackson, Superman, and Mickey Mouse all make appearances--raises interesting questions about the globalized world. • This is a Buddhist temple in Chiang Rai, but with a difference, that it also houses art exhibits. We hired a three wheeler (songtaew) for a day and reach this site after a stopover at Mae Fah Luang.....  more »
  • The White Temple is n real art temple . The architecture Full of meaning in every detail. Recommends to book the ticket first before you come here because a lot of visitor anytime . There are some food shop or restaurants near the temple you also can have the lunch very convenient. really like the white color with the silver color and the stories about to heaven and hell . Come here before you check some architecture history and preview the artist backgrounds about this artwork that will be more helpful when you see the whole building. It is very beautiful and touching . Here is a little bit far from Chiang Mai city around three hours. But is really worthy 🙏🏼
  • It is really a temple very different from any other you've seen before. The structure and its construction attract a lot of attention due to its high level of detail. The interior of the temple is relatively simple considering the exterior appearance. It is important to consider that you cannot take pictures inside the temple. As in any other temple, you have to be respectful with the way you dress. There's a lot of tourists, so I recommend spending at least 1:30 h to be able to see the place in general.
