Trip Planner: Asia / Thailand / Chiang Mai Province / Chiang Mai / Wat Phra That Doi Kham (Temple of the Golden Mountain)
See the 17 m (56 ft) tall Buddha guarded by warrior statues and marvel at the 7th century gilded chedis (reliquaries), guarded by giant golden Naga serpants, at Wat Phra That Doi Kham (Temple of the Golden Mountain). This little-visited mountain temple sits just south of the better-known Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. From a beautifully carved look-out point, enjoy panoramic views of Chiang Mai as hanging bells all around you tinkle in the breeze. Local legends tell of a family of cannibalistic rakshasa (demons) who lived in the area, until Lord Buddha visited the area and converted them to Buddhism by showing them kindness. The temple holds a relic of Lord Buddha's hair, which he supposedly gave to the rakshasa. Put Wat Phra That Doi Kham (Temple of the Golden Mountain) into our Chiang Mai trip maker site and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

Great off the beaten path temple to visit. We witnessed a ceremony during our visit and it was a great impromptu cultural experience. Go to the Grand Canyon before or after to make it an full day. Rent a scooter in Chiang Mai for 200-250 baht and zip around, ride safe and you will have a unique experience you will never forget.
It is important local pilgrimage site,as holy relics of Divine Buddha's hair is said to be in stupa. But as said by previous reviews, not much as an architectural site, and view are better at dawn.
