Temple of the Golden Buddha (Wat Traimit), Bangkok

4.4
Witness the delicately modeled beauty of the world's largest gold seated Buddha at Temple of the Golden Buddha (Wat Traimit). Many of Asia's golden statues were once covered in plaster and stucco to disguise them from invading armies during times of conflict. The discovery of this magnificent golden Buddha was accidental: a team of people moving the object dropped it, its plaster casing cracked, and the golden figure shone out after many years in hiding. Visit the established Bangkok temple complex to admire the Buddha's clear, crisp form and learn of its fascinating origins. • We were allowed to enter for free, they were apparently organizing a party here. The temple in itself is beautiful and the Golden Buddha impressive, but there are nicer temples in Bangkok.

  • Among the many temples in Bangkok, this is a must see place simply because of the huge gold temple, and also of the history of how the Buddha statue was hidden for centuries unknown to many it was mad...  more »

  • This temple houses the largest gold statue of Buddha. There was an entrance fee of 40 baht when I visited. The temple isn't that large, and can be quite crowded, but overall it was good to have seen. A free pamphlet is provided which tells the interesting story behind the statue. It won't take long to go through the whole temple, so I would recommend planning this as just one of your stops through the old city.
  • There are so many wonderful temples in Thailand. Hundreds in fact. I didn't even think this one was one of the nicest. It is over touristed, and they take every opportunity to sell something, which denigrates that humble experience of seeing a temple. Go if you must check it off some list, but do yourself a favor and visit some of the other wonderful and FREE temples all over the city.
