Kivukoni Fish Market, Dar es Salaam

#4 of 24 in Shopping in Dar es Salaam
Flea Market · Shopping
Witness the daily routine of a fisher at Kivukoni Fish Market. In the morning, boats bring in their fresh catch, which fishmongers auction, scale, and gut on site. The huge market features two main sections divided into eight zones, some of which are housed in a large concrete building. Sardines, kingfish, snapper, octopuses, stingray, squid, and shrimp go quickly in this chaotic and colorful place. The scene includes German-style colonial buildings lining the waterfront, and a bustle of women sitting in circles auctioneering. • Busy place for buying fish and other seafood for cooking. Interesting place to see how local people carry on their daily business. Can also taste cooked seafood.
  • Nice place but if you wish to take photos, the guards there ask you 20 000 shillings !!
