At Alishan National Forest Recreation Area you, can hike in the scenic mountain surroundings, and take in nationally renowned views, enhanced by the area's unique climate. Covering an area of 1,400 ha (3,459 ac), Alishan rests 2,200 m (7,217 ft) above sea level and has a climate that stays fairly constant all year round, with an average temperature of 10.6 C (51 F) and a humid, cloudy atmosphere. The weather can get very cool year-round, so be sure to bring along something warm to wear no matter when you visit. Gorgeous views! Huge trees, over 1000 years old. Endless scapes of beauty and tranquility. Always lots of people. We enjoyed the street food and stayed at one of the cheaper hotels in the park. Cheaper but still clean and excellent service (we rented an overcoat for the cold sunrise). Very little English.
Overall the park is fantastic, climbing out of the Taiwanese jungle and into the alpine ecosystem of Taiwan's formidable mountain ranges. This is one of the few places in Taiwan where old-growth forest (cypress and cedar trees) can be easily witnessed, and some of the specimens are amazing... some estimated at more than 2,000 years old. The whole park is easy to wander around, with well marked trails. It's one of my favorite spots in Taiwan. One point: holidays can be INCREDIBLY busy, with parking difficult to find, and lines at the park entrance over 1 hour long... It's best to go on a non-holidays weekend.
