Swiss National Park is part of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The park was founded in 1914 and it is still the only national park in Switzerland and the largest protected area of the country. In the park, it's not allowed to leave marked paths, light a fire or sleep outside the Chamanna Cluozza, the mountain hut located in the park. It is also forbidden to disturb animals or plants, or to take home anything found in the park. Dogs are not allowed, even on a leash. Due to these strict rules, the park is the only park in the Alps which has been categorized by the IUCN as a strict nature reserve, the highest protection level worldwide. The park is well known for its extraordinary variety of alpine animals, such as chamois, deer, and marmots. A host of alpine plants provide a colorful sight as visitors make their way through. There is a wide choice of paths, with differing degrees of difficulty. In winter, the park is closed, in order to respect the dormancy of the animals. A visitor centre open all year long is located in Zernez. The road through the park leads over the Fuorn Pass (or Ofenpass) to South Tyrol in Italy. The hiking trails are usually open from May to middle of November. From mid-November footpaths may not be visible in the snow and there is a risk of avalanches. The Park remains closed to visitors until the end of May, respecting the dormancy of the animals. Please visit website for more information.
