Faulhorn, Grindelwald

4.6
#3 of 6 in Nature in Grindelwald
Hike to the rounded peak of Faulhorn and admire the rugged scenery of the snowcapped Bernese Alps. Several trails wind their way to the 2,681 m (8,796 ft) summit. At the top, take in sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and Lake Thurne below. Stop in the well-known hotel at the summit, where you can reward yourself with a fortifying meal. The ascent requires a decent level of fitness, but the well-preserved trail won't present any great challenge to experienced hikers. • A great winter walk takes longer than they say in the winter, end of January was deep snow -18 degrees air 16% less than sea level which makes it hard work, the lake was frozen over and covered in dee...  more »
  • To enjoy to the top of the mountain! Zip train in Goldswil to Shynige Platte and high quality landscape excursion to First. On the way it is worthwhile to go a bit to climb the slope to the Pico Faulhorn and drink something warm in the restaurant of the old hotel to rest a little legs. Although once called the peak of women for the ease of their ascent, not to be trusted because it has also hard stretches of medium difficulty. When crowning, it was the only time of our trip to Switzerland where we saw nothing but fog. Fortunately, just descending a bit disappeared.

  • Begrudgingly giving this a five star. Anything less than that is a joke. Also who rates mountains? View is incredible, amazing, etc. but the hike in the snow nearly killed us. There was close to 12" on the ground, and it was real slippery.
  • The Faulhorn has to offer one of the best 360º panoramas in all of Switzerland, because it is located right at the northern edge of the Berner Oberland Alpine mountain range. So, when looking northwards, views have the Jura in the foreground, but could extend as far as Southern Germany's Schwarzwald/Black Forest, while looking southwards shows all the high peaks of the region, with a few four-thousanders soaring above all else. Absolutely astounding. The hike is demanding, because even though the tracks remain accessible in winter conditions, the ascent is actually steep. Renting a sleigh might save you the descent.
