  • We did an amazing "Night Aurora Photo Tour" with Lights Over Lapland during our visit to Abisko in March 2019. We came to the north of Sweden to visit the Swedish UNESCO World Heritage Sites the Laponian Area and the Church Town of Gammelstad located there and for the possibility to see the Northern Lights, the Aurora Borealis. Abisko is rated as one of the best places in the world to see the Northern Lights so it was immediately added to our trip as a must place for us to visit. We met our Tour Guide and self-proclaimed Photography Nerd Harry at the Abisko STF a bit before 8 p.m. They provide warm overalls to wear over your clothes and warm boots for the extreme temperatures, it was -20 on the night we visited, so dress warmly. We brought our own Fujifilm X-T20 camera and lightweight tripod but they actually provide both camera and tripod if you don’t have your own. The camera they use is a DSLR Nikon, with a nice sturdy tripod. Our guide Harry was wonderful, very patient, professional, sweet and always eager to help. You actually don’t need to know much about cameras or photography, he explains all the settings to use before heading out into the cold arctic night. We were super lucky because the Aurora was already visible from the very beginning of the tour so we didn’t have to go far. We walked just a few minutes into the forest next to the frozen lake and started taking pictures right away. There was a teepee with fire for us to warm up and Harry provided some warm lingonberry juice which was lovely and very welcome in the cold, cold night. We got some stunning shots of the Aurora and Harry even took portraits of us with the Aurora with our own camera. Overall, it was a wonderful and very memorable experience, highly recommended to everyone.
