Buduruwagala, Yala National Park

#2 of 14 in Things to do in Yala National Park
Monument · Tourist Spot
See the ancient Buddhist temple of Buduruwagala, which dates back to the 10th century CE. Seven statues in the temple belong to the Mahayana school, with a collection of small rock-carved figures surrounding the 15 m (51 ft) tall standing Buddha. Faded paintwork, now barely visible, shows that the statutes were once brightly colored. Pay attention to the natural scenery leading to the temple, especially traditional villages, ponds, and wildlife. Admire the ancient rock carvings while enjoying the peaceful atmosphere of the site. • Loved this place. Simple contemplative place. Difficult to get to without the assistance of a tuk tuk driver, make sure you barter effectively! Well worth visiting early before the crowds descend.  more »
