#1 of 7 in Things to do in Udawalawe National Park
At Udawalawe National Park, 165 km (103 mi) east of Sri Lanka's capitol, explore the sanctuary for wild animals that were once displaced during the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir on the Walawe River. Established on in 1972, the reserve covers 308 sq km (119 sq mi). Observe one of park's biggest attractions--elephants--along with jungle cats, monkeys, crocodiles, and other wildlife. After taking a safari, visit the orphanage where professional caretakers nurse baby animals and release them into the wild as they reach maturity. • This is the closest national park to Colombo. Around 3-4 hours drive from Colombo. Most common attraction here is the wild elephants. There are deer, wild boar and many birds can be easily seen. Few leopards in here and we are lucky enough to see one. Best time to see the animals are in the early hours from 6.00sm to 11.00am and then after 3.00pm. Few government maintained bungalows inside the park where you able to stay overnight. But facilities in these bungalows are very limited.
  • A very nice safari. Gotta love the elephants, these magnificent creatures. Bumpy roads but nice view nice nature and many elephants to see. The wait to get in is long and boring but it's definitely worth it, also getting up at 5 o clock let's you see the sun rise
