Perched on a rocky crag, Mulgirigala Raja Maha Vihara is an ancient Buddhist temple comprised of Buddha statues and five compounds. Built in the third century, the structure has withstood time amazingly well and has seen visits from numerous kings throughout its history. The statues include lying, sitting, and standing figures of Buddha, with Kandy-era wall paintings based on Jataka stories decorating many of the temple walls. Guides will wait at the entrance and offer to show you around, but make sure to get the best price before accepting. In about 1 hour and a half you can visit it. Before you enter, you'll be able to see some outstretched Buddhas in a kind of caves. Once past the entrance, you have to climb quite a few stairs to reach another area where you can see different rooms of the monastery with striking Buddhas and paintings on the walls. Then, to "the top" of the mountain, where there is a beautiful view. Buddha monks are available to "bless you" (they sing you) and put some bracelets on your wrist, and if you want, in return you give them a donation for the monstareio. A different experience and very, highly recommended.
Absulutt verd en tur. Eldgammle trapper som fører opp til grottene og toppen. Ikke så mye å se fra toppen, fjern noen trær. Nydelige veggmalerier og statuer. more »
Very quite and calm temple located in a hill surrounded with nature. There are few temples in different level of the hill. It’s good to climb to the top And there are steps to climb.
Sacred Buddhist temple. Up and down the stairs took about 1 hour with stops in between at various shrines. Reclining Buddha inside the caves with the rock ceiling having been painted. Nice view point at the summit of the rock with a Buddhist Pagoda.
