Ruin Landmark Must See
Visit the historic complex of Sigiriya, an ancient city centered around a massive stone plateau. King Kasyapa selected the spot to be the nation’s capital in the 5th century, and built his palace on top of the enormous, 200 m (660 ft) tall rock. You’ll need to climb more than a thousand steps to reach the summit and admire the ruins of Sri Lanka’s oldest palace. Peer over the edge to observe the gardens below, a marvel of urban planning, featuring still-functional fountains. Along the way, you can see the remains of the gate--once shaped like a lion’s head--as well as numerous ancient frescoes. Put Sigiriya and other Sigiriya attractions into our Sigiriya itinerary app , and watch your holiday take shape.

  • I went to Sri Lanka in February 2018 to see this Sigiriya Rock. SigiliaRock is a bit rural, so i think it's best to head from the big bus terminal to tuk-tuk. There was a tour, but I chartered it by myself because I remember it was about 2,000 yen only by the entrance fee. I went on a day off, such as Saturday sat, so It was crowded. Recommended on weekdays. Actually climb the boulder swells up using stairs, etc. (it is not impossible or active work if you do not have any experience of climbing a mountain in particular). However, there is a certain height because it goes to the top of the stone. It might be difficult to turn back when it is crowded. The view from the top was good! I'm just a sanse...

  • We were there for the bird watching which was amazing - stunning scenery. Seems busy when you get there but you can quickly get away from the crowds.  more »

  • Great place to visit. Try to make it early in the morning. Cash only tickets. Take a guide( 2000lkr). The first one third of the climb is easy. Slow and steady, as you see the water storage and drainage systems called as water gardens. Then the boulder garden, which is also a fair walk. Next comes the steep climb to the cave which lodges a few wall painting. Descent downwards and walk alone the mirror wall. A few more steps and you reach the lion's paw. You can catch your breath here, refill water and start the last leg of your journey. The stairs here are a bit steep, but the climb is well worth it The view from the top is enchanting. It gets very windy on the way.
  • Must visit place! I paid for a guide which was quite expensive Sri Lanka wise, but it was worth it for this to tell me the history. Really interesting and nice hike up. Great views of the whole island from the top.
