Kirigalpotta, Ohiya

#14 of 21 in Nature in Uva Province
Mountain · Hidden Gem · Nature / Park
Kirigalpotta is the 2nd tallest mountain in Sri Lanka at 2,388 m (7,835 ft) above mean sea level, and is also the highest mountain in the country whose summit is accessible to the general public (the highest point, Pidurutalagala, is occupied by a military base and off-limits to the public). The peak is situated near the city of Nuwara Eliya, within the Nuwara Eliya District. Only one 7 km (4 mi) hiking trail provides access to the mountain's summit via the Horton Plains National Park, although the trail is not very popular.

  • Climbing the mountain in Sri Lanka – Mt. Kirigalpotta! After climbing Sri Lanka’s most sacred mountain, Adam’s Peak . We ate our breakfast, packed our things and proceeded to our next journey. We rode a bus via Maskeliya to Hatton Bus Station. From Hatton Bus Station, we took another bus to Nuwara Eliya. The next morning, we visited Horton Plains (prior to this trip, we made the transportation arrangements a day before). By the way, you need to pay the Entrance Fee before you can proceed to the hiking trails. In our case, we’ve decided to climb the mountain without guides. So, we downloaded an offline google map and compass. Although, you can find some established trails but they are not so reliable and quite confusing. Attempting to summit is for the daring adventurers only as the conditions can be treacherous due to the difficulty of the trails/terrains and weather conditions.
