Minneriya National Park, North Central Province

4.2
#1 of 16 in Parks in North Central Province
The largest known meeting place for Asian elephants, Minneriya National Park provides the natural corridor amidst tropical dry mixed evergreen forests that attract herds of these wild creatures. Observe the largest mammal as it searches for food and water while making its way to the shores of a rainwater reservoir. Bring a pair of binoculars to examine more than 170 species of birds, like the woodsand piper, rufus woodpecker, or the lesser adjutant. The wildlife reserve also harbors many endemic amphibians and reptiles. Remember to keep a safe distance from the mugger crocodile, regardless of its relatively calm nature. Temperatures in the park can soar, so bring extra water. Choose to start, finish, or center your holiday on a trip to Minneriya National Park by using our North Central Province trip maker tool .

  • In Sri Lanka, there are few national parks where you can go on safari to watch for wild animals like Udawalawa, Yala, Wilpaththu & so on. Minneriya is special because of the wide range of areas and th...  more »
  • At the Beginning the tour I was a little apprehensive as to whether we would be fortunate enough to see any elephants - this wasn't a problem! Although the drive through the woodland area was exciting...  more »

  • Absolutely horrible. This is one of the most UNETHICAL and ABUSIVE thing you can do as tourists. There are no rules here. There are masses of jeeps crowding around the poor elephants all day long. They literally chase them and corner them in to get close enough so all the tourists are happy. They drive off of the roads into the grass to get close. The elephants are truly scared and running away. So cold hearted how this institution can allow people to invade the sacred home of these beautiful animals JUST FOR MONEY! This could be a great experience if there were simple rules such as how many jeeps allowed in at a time and a set distance that jeeps must stay away. STAY FAR AWAY. We need to be more responsible and empathetic human beings and TOURISTS!
  • A must place to visit if you are travelling to Sri Lanka. It's about 5 hour drive from Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka. If you are elephant lover this is one of the best places to see and feed elephants. There are lots of travel operators from Colombo who would take you there. Also there are plenty of safari style 4-wheel drive tour operators in the area. Quite safe and friendly local people. But as always be mindful of your surroundings and your belongings.
