Royal Palace of Kandy, Kandy

#4 of 13 in Historic Sites in Kandy
Castle · Hidden Gem · Landmark
Compare the different architectural styles displayed by structures within Royal Palace of Kandy, the former residence of royal families. The palace consisted of several parts, including the king’s palace, the royal audience hall, the temple of the tooth, and the queen’s palace. However, having been burned down and rebuilt several times, little of the original complex remains. Today, you can see the temple of the tooth, which serves as the only entrance, and the royal court. It was believed that the temple holds Buddha’s tooth, granting whoever possesses the relic with the divine blessing to rule. • When visiting Kandy, do not miss this palace. Stunning view with forest behind it
  • Sri Dalada Maligawa, or Temple of the Tooth Relic, is the holiest Buddhist temple in Sri Lanka. It is located in the city of Kandy, the ancient capital of the Kandyan kingdom. During my visit to Kandy with a small group of AsiaExplorers members, I had the privilege not only to visit the temple, but also to enter the holy sanctuary. Our tour guide was able to arrange with the temple escort for us to be ushered to the inner sanctuary, a place where normal pilgrims would not have a chance to visit. Directly before us is the doorway to the holy of holies. However, as I am not a Buddhist, the visit is merely of cultural rather than religious value to me.
