Jaffna Fort, Jaffna

#2 of 13 in Historic Sites in Jaffna
Historic Site · Tourist Spot
A remarkable embodiment of the Hindu-Tamil culture, Jaffna Fort represents an archeological monument to Sri Lanka's internal strife. While the current fort's construction dates from 1618 following the Portuguese invasion, some evidence suggests its layout goes back to ancient Buddhist cultural expansion. Through the colonial period, the British and the Dutch also held the fort under their governance, which led to the creation as well as the destruction of certain segments. Inside, find a church with the statue of Virgin Mary, governor's residence, garrison parade ground, and queen's house, among other buildings from the Portuguese era. Bring a hat and extra sunscreen for your visit, since it can get incredibly hot under the sun. • A must visit - specially at sundown !! Insta places. Specially the pics including the palmyrah trees.  more »
  • Foreigners pay 725 rupees (approximately $ 4) to enter the fort. A visit for this price is not worth it. Only the perimeter walls are repaired. Information boards are also missing.  more »
