Tsunami Honganji Vihara, Hikkaduwa

4.4
A 30 m tall (54 ft) statue of Buddha facing the ocean at Tsunami Honganji Vihara commemorates more than 2,000 victims who perished in the 2004 tsunami. Built with the assistance of Japan's Honganji Temple of Kyoto, the statue was based on the Buddhas of Bamiyan in Afghanistan, destroyed by the Taliban in March 2001. Erected a couple hundred meters from the shore, the statue stands on a platform guarded by four lions surrounded by a pond. The location makes a nice stopover just off Bentota-Galle Road at Hikkaduwa town. Consider combining your visit with a stop at the nearby sea turtle hatchery. • You will pass by, be sure to allocate 10 minutes. visit this monument. Sri Lankans are very sensitive to this terrible tragedy, it has affected everyone, traces of this tragedy at every turn, for 15 they just began to recover from the past. At the monument there is a small museum with photos, it, unlike many other similar museums is very correct, there are no photos of frank tin (shock-content), as we have seen in other museums. The monument itself stands on a small island, you can approach it. Its height is symbolic - the maximum height of the wave off the coast.

  • As with most statues or munuments the meaning is always greater than the representation - donated by Japan the statue and area is very pleasant and gives a area for mourning - the monument to the railway victims killed by the Tsunami sets a more striking example.Entarance free of charge
