Plaza de la Virgen Blanca, Vitoria-Gasteiz

Rising to prominence in the 17th century, during the expansion of the city of Vitoria, Plaza de la Virgen Blanca today continues to serve as a popular meeting place and hub of the surrounding town. Admire the wood-and-glass verandas and traditional construction of 19th-century Spanish homes surrounding the square. The large monument in the center, dedicated to the 1813 Battle of Vitoria, commemorates the victory that forced Napoleon’s retreat from Spain. Grab a coffee or some local Basque treats from one of the surrounding cafes, and explore the plaza’s many nooks and crannies. Be sure to bring your camera, as the surrounding buildings, backed by the spire of the Church of San Miguel, provide a popular photo opportunity.
