Teide National Park, Tenerife

#2 of 36 in Nature in Tenerife
A national park that blossomed from the base of a volcano that is also the tallest mountain in Spain, Teide National Park is the most visited national park in the country. Almost three million visitors have been awed by the 3,718 m (12,198 ft) mountain peak. The remarkable terrain in the park is frequently studied by scientists because of its similarity to the planet Mars. Indeed, you'll notice red soil and strange plant life creating a Martian atmosphere along your walking trails. Visit the park's website to plan a hike and check the weather for your outdoor adventure. To plan Tenerife vacation without wasting time, ask Inspirock to design an itinerary.

  • Must visit if you go to Tenerife. It is advisable to buy the tickets for the funicular online and in advance. We didn't do it, as we had to book time and we didn't know if we'd make it in time. When we got to the ticket office, there were no tickets left. We were lucky enough that on the website there was. Poor coordination between the two sales options. And the taquillero didn't bother to tell us to test it on the web. Good thing we came up with... The climb is fast, although the funicular is full and you can't sit down, it's a bit awkward. Once up it's spectacular. We have to be warm, just in case. You are at 3,500 meters and the time can change quickly. Wear a hat or head cap and sunprotection. Boots or at least sneakers. The floor is stone and very uneven. The scenery is spectacular. There are two trails that end in a viewpoint. I recommend the one that ends up in the old peak, another dormant volcanic cone. I also recommend parking your car at one of the viewpoints and enjoying a landscape more typical of Mars than Earth. A marvel

  • Well worth renting a car and driving around this park. Like a different planet at times and resembles the canyons of America. The central piece being the spectacular El Teide volcano which rises even ...  more »

  • The moon, Mars and Venus all in one place. Being here feels nothing short of otherworldly. Go to one of the many visitors centers to get a deeper understanding and a higher appreciation of the geological formations you can find here. With the last eruption being about a hundred years ago, you get a real feeling of how you're living on a planet that is alive, dynamic and changing. Easy access by car, just an hour from the coast.
  • The best experience of my life. Beautiful place which definitely worth the money spent. If you won't be lucky and get the permit to go on the top of Teide, make sure to go at least at the end of the cable car. And if you will be walking on the top, make sure to have enough water (4-5 liters of water per person is not too much), proper walking boots and warm clothes for when you reach the top.
