Catedral de Sevilla, Seville

4.7
One of the largest Gothic churches in the world, Catedral de Sevilla is the final resting place of Christopher Columbus and a World Heritage Site. The awe-inspiring cathedral is 126 m (413 ft) long and 83 m (272 ft) wide, built on the site of a former mosque. The mosque’s minaret, now serving as a converted bell tower, still stands right next to the cathedral. Climb up this emblematic tower for sweeping views of Seville, or tour the interior to see the longest nave of any cathedral in the country. Inside the main body of the cathedral, the most noticeable features are the choir lofts and the carved scenes from the life of Christ. A single craftsman, Pierre Dancart, spent his entire life completing the work on the richly detailed altarpiece, considered one of the finest in the world. • I know that my review of the Catedral de Sevilla is just a drop in the bucket. If in Sevilla, the cathedral is definitely worth a stop. For those wanting some interpretation of the building, be sure to either read up beforehand or get a guide as there is a lot to take in. Additionally, for those who can take the stairs up the tower, the climb is worth it as the views offered from the cathedral are completely unhindered. The best part about the walk up is that the winding ramp/stair combo isn't all that steep. Still, it's a ways up--breathtaking in more than one way!
  • We took the rooftop tour. It was amazing. You walk up the small stairs to various levels. It may be a bit hard for those with physical issues, but it was fine for us and our kids. The view from the outside as well as the inside are amazing. Well worth the time and cost.
