  • Its foundation dates back to 1218 and for this reason it is considered the oldest in Spain, since the University of Palencia (1212) was abolished a few years after its founding and no longer exists. The university building in Salamanca, with a square plan, stands out for the color of its exterior walls, for the beautiful facade in the plateresque style and for the square in front, surrounded by walls on which it is still possible to read, albeit faded, the initials of those who have graduated here over the centuries. Then there is the famous frog on the skull, to be found in the intricacy of friezes, symbols, figures of the facade (which concern the Catholic kings, Charles V, the Papacy): our guide explained to us that the frog was considered a symbol of lust and that it had been placed there to warn students not to forget the right path and study.

  • I give 3 stars because it's worth to visit, but the entrance, that costs 10€, is totally overpriced. It's a shame for a place of such importance...
  • I visited the Univetsity in 1958 and was impressed by its architecture and its hustory. I believe I was told it was the oldest running university in the world.
