Puente Romano, Salamanca

4.5
Bridge · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
Marvel at the resilience of Puente Romano, as 15 of its 26 arches are over 2,000 years old. This ancient construction, crossing the Tormes River, was built in the first century CE. Walk across the bridge away from the city and look back for superb views of Salamanca, including the cathedrals and other major monuments. You may recognize the bridge as being part of the city’s shield. Beside the bridge, look for the sculpture of a bull, which is also featured on the crest. • When I saw this bridge the first time I was amazed. I could hardly comprehend that a two thousand year old bridge could be in such good shape, let alone still stand. It is an amazing piece of engineering and absolutely beautiful to look at.
