Convento Las Claras, Salamanca

4.6
Despite its modest exterior, Convento Las Claras draws art lovers with its medieval wall frescoes. Initially founded in the 13th century by a Franciscan order known as the "Poor Clares," the convent retains few of its original Gothic elements due to an extensive renovation project completed in the 16th century. Highlights include the remains of an old wooden ceiling, as well as an on-site museum of village life, filled with everyday household items and tools collected by a local priest. Don't miss the lower choir's well-preserved wall paintings from the 14th century, unexpectedly discovered in 1976 beneath several layers of whitewash.
