Trip Planner: Europe / Spain / Andalucia / Province of Malaga / Costa del Sol / Ronda / Plaza de Toros de Ronda
In atmospheric Plaza de Toros de Ronda, it's easy to imagine a raucous crowd letting out a collective "Olé!" as a costumed bullfighter deftly averts a steaming-mad bull. At one time, this was one of Spain's most important bullrings. It features 136 pillars and 68 arches lining 2 rows of seating and a stone passageway leading to the large dirt circle in the middle. Its rural location means bullfights take place infrequently these days, but tours of the arena and bullpens remain on offer. Check out the small chapel where bullfighters pray before taking to the ring. To see collections of royal harnesses and antique firearms, head into the museum. The amount of artifacts and history was truly enjoyable. The arena was impressive and the building in excellent condition. The musuem aspect was extensive and surprising. I highly recommend while visiting the area. It also has a restaurant/bar inside with a gift shop. This is definitely in the top ten if you only have 2 days here.
It's a controversial topic, even in Andalusia, and even in Spain. To some people bullfighting is a crime against animals, to others it is a right of passage and manhood, of duende. The bullring in Ronda is historical and possibly the most historic of them all, although the argument exists for good reason that Granada's may be more famous or important. If you are in Ronda, I think you would be missing an important piece Andalusian culture if you didn't visit this place.
