Trip Planner: Europe / Spain / Catalonia / Province of Tarragona / Poblet / Real Monasterio de Santa Maria de Poblet
Founded in 1151 by French monks, Real Monasterio de Santa Maria de Poblet forms a triangle with two other monasteries: Vallbona de les Monges and Santes Creus. Eight Aragonese kings were buried here over three centuries. War turned the monastery to ruins, but Italian monks reconstructed it in 1940. You’ll see the imprint of the centuries’ various architectural styles here. Active monks still live at this site. You can even visit the wine cellar for a tasting. Place highly recommended to visit. Very beautiful if it also coincides with the vispers prayed by the monks, or complete ones, and also officiate mass every day. On your website are the schedules.
What a nice way to spend a couple of hours! You get a real sense of how the monks lived. The architecture is amazing and the gardens are so pretty. We even got the organ being played which made it seem more special. The drive up was pretty and easy. Parking was free and the the lot was big. Bathrooms are clean. The gift shop is nice and it's easy to find things you'd like to buy.
Beautiful place to visit, full of history and tranquility. The Cistercian architecture style is truly remarkable in its simplicity. I could have spent hours just sitting in the cloister. Filled my heart with peace.
