Trip Planner: Europe / Spain / Andalucia / Province of Huelva / Palos de la Frontera / Muelle de las Carabelas
At Muelle de las Carabelas, see replicas of Columbus’ ships and learn about the explorer's journey to the New World. The museum paints a picture of 15th-century Spain through reproductions of maps, arms, and treaties. An audio-visual production tells the story of the sailors who made the voyage to the New World. Board the Pinta, Niña, and Santa María, which are now occasionally used in TV and film productions. Visit the medieval port city neighborhood exhibit to view how locals lived when Columbus set sail, and the Isla del Encuentro exhibit to see the world Columbus came upon when his ships landed. We find the facility very imaginatively designed, including the reconstructed Caribbean island where the ships landed. The ascent of the 3 ships, which have just been renovated, is interesting and encourages you to learn more about the voyages of these sailors. It would be nice if the film, which fascinates me personally, was accompanied in a little slower Spanish and possibly in English....
The absolute must have when you go holiday with children. It gives them unique opportunity to see, touch and feel Columb's ships replica, learn about his travels and discoveries.
Definitely worth a visit. I must congratulate the museum curators for the wonderful replica vessels that are the main attraction, but also for the beautifully presented museum and video, explaining Columbus's difficulties in sponsoring the initial journey and a brief description of the amazing journey itself. There is also a nice cafe offering hot and cold food and drinks.
