Santa María del Naranco. Prerrománico asturiano, Oviedo

4.6
Must see · World heritage site · Landmark · Tourist Spot
Remarkably well preserved for being more than 1,000 years old, Santa María del Naranco. Prerrománico asturiano has served as a hunting palace as well as a pre-Romanesque church. Its architecture is worth studying because of the age alone, but it’s also unique in style: at the front and the rear, four columns each form porticos. Note the sculpture of a Greek cross, which symbolizes the Asturian monarchy. Enjoy views down to the city of Oviedo and toward the statue of Christ on the cross. • Under construction so we could not see it inside but I am glad we went. The view is beautiful and there is a restaurant nearby were you can enjoy it. The palace is first.
  • I only saw the place from outside, so I don't know about the guided tour but the building is not to be missed. Unique in it's genre.
